Below- A little more about the walk:
“The Sudan Campaign Freedom Walk Campaign was initiated by Simon Deng, a Sudanese man captured into slavery as a child in Sudan. He later escaped bondage and now resides in New York City, but travels often to spread awareness about modern slavery and the atrocities facing the people of Sudan. The goal of Freedom Walk is to ultimately increase the global response, focusing on the United States to free the 40 million people in Sudan from the treacherous policies perpetrated by the Government of Khartoum. This Government, either through policy, collusion or apathy, has been party to human trafficking, torture, ethnic cleansing, genocide, international terrorism, as well as numerous other human rights violations and injustices. Intended to be a forum for advocacy for all issues in Sudan, we have gained the support other former slaves from the African continent who have migrated to the United States, immigrants and refugees of the crisis in Darfur, and a diverse group of organizations and individuals supportive of this call for human rights in Sudan.
The Freedom Walk is sponsored by The Sudan Campaign, a coalition of organizations, and elected officials advocating for justice and peace in Sudan. These organizations which include Christian Solidarity International, the American Anti-Slavery Group, the Institute on Religion and Democracy and the Center for Religious Freedom at Freedom House, have conducted activism on behalf of peace and justice in Sudan since 2000. The Sudan Campaign’s President, Joe Madison is a nationally known radio personality and activist. He is joined by the Honorary Chairman, The Rev. Walter Fauntroy, long time civil rights activist who organized Martin Luther King’s historic Washington march. Co- Chairs of the Campaign include Dr. John Eibner, Dr. Charles Jacobs, Faith McDonnell and Nina Shea.”
